How to Avoid Stress at Work

A new study reveals that people are stressed at work. How can you avoid feeling stressed?

A recent study that was published in the Independent on Sunday has revealed that stress is a major concern for people in the workplace.

According to the survey, only a third of employed people look forward to work, while two fifths don’t think they are likely to progress in their current profession. A quarter of respondents, meanwhile, are unable to maintain a good work-life balance.

The survey also touches on the reasons for this stress, with many witnessing the effects of the recent economic downturn firsthand. A fifth of people have seen someone sacked without good cause, and the same fraction have either seen or experienced irregular pay.

How to avoid stress

RBS Mentor has published '7 positives for a better life', in which Jerry Hill, head of consultancy support, safety, health and environmental, outlines seven ways to avoid stress at work. Here are the first three positives (for all seven, visit the RBS Mentor website).

Change the thought – change the outcome: This really is the starting point, the reprogramming of your brain. Replace an unhelpful or negative thought or belief with a new positive one. Use your imagination to visualise or ‘show’ your brain what you want. Imagine how you’ll feel when you achieve your goal.

Self-belief starts with you: If you can’t believe in you, how can you expect others to do so? This is a very empowering way of taking more control in your life, rather than relying on others to make you feel good. Stop looking to others for affirmations.

Don’t just do what you did last year: ‘If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you always got’ goes the saying, and how true is that? If you didn’t like the way something happened last year, change how you approach a similar situation this year, and do something different.
