Spotlight - P&G Cards - UB Business Achievers Finalist

Long, long time ago (in 1988)

When the health cutbacks of the mid eighties resulted in Pauline Naughton losing her position as a nurse in Roscommon County Hospital, little did she know then that she would go on to set up and operate a very successful business which would become successful both on national and international markets. Having left her nursing position, she worked for a short period in her brother-in-laws newsagents in Longford town, with one of the duties of her role being the management and merchandising of the greeting card section of the business. It was during this time that it came to her attention that all greeting cards being marketed in Ireland were from the UK and America and that at that time there was no Irish greeting card supplier in the market. Having undertaken further research in this area, Pauline set about changing this and in 1988 P&G Cards was born.

Pauline initially commenced producing greeting cards from an out-building at the side of her home while also rearing a family of five children. Pauline’s husband Gerry, at that time was a successful member of An Garda Siochana and in more recent years retired from the force and joined Pauline in the business.

Employing 66 people

From small beginnings, P&G Cards grew in leaps and bounds and now operates from a purpose built property at Athleague, Co Roscommon, employing a total of 66 people nationwide through a mix of full and part time contracts. Their longest serving employee has been with them for 18 years.

Channel

P&G Cards has developed strong trading links throughout Ireland supplying large multiple and symbol groups including MRPI (through their national brands Supervalu & Centra), BWG's Spar and Mace, Londis stores, the Barry Group and a number of other prestigious independent retailers throughout Ireland. P&G cards have traded so successfully that in June 2010 the company was awarded the contract to supply all Dunnes Stores outlets in Ireland and Northern Ireland with a premium range of greeting cards.

International

P&G cards designs, manufactures and distributes greeting cards and associated stationery i.e. wrapping paper gift bags not only in Ireland, but more recently has established European Markets in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Malta and Cyprus. Worldwide they export to Australia, South Africa and Barbados. More recently P&G Cards have had strong interest from Germany, Holland, Malaysia and St. Lucia and plans are afoot to develop this section of their business further.

Competition

P&G Card’s direct competitors in the international greeting card market come from the likes of Hallmark Cards, UKG (through their brands Carlton & Gibson cards) and in the Irish Market Garlanna Cards, Paper Tree, Match Girl, Kenna Cards, Paperhouse and Budget Greetings.

Jack and Jill

P&G Cards also has strong links to the Charity Jack & Jill, having worked for many years with Jonathon Irwin and his team, designing, manufacturing and distributing Christmas boxed cards through their distribution channels, with a contribution from their sale going directly to the charity.

Family business

P&G Cards is a family run business with 4 members of the Naughton family now involved in the company with Pauline Naughton holding the position of Managing Director, her husband Gerry, being Purchasing Director and her two daughters Michelle Naughton/Daly holding the position of Marketing & Sales Director and Aishling Naughton holding the role of Operations Director.

P&G Cards is undoubtedly an Irish success story, with quality and service being at the heart of everything they do.
