CO3 Media Summit with Jon Snow

Jon Snow, the “face” of Channel 4 News addressed the CO3 Media Summit held at Crumlin Road Gaol on 6th September.  Jon addressed an audience of over 100 Chief Executives of charitable and voluntary associations from right across Northern Ireland on the importance of independent commentary and the role of the third sector in the media.  He said,

“The third sector is an asset resource, more of a resource now that it has ever been.  The third sector is a magical jumping off point for the media to understand the challenges of our society. “

Also speaking was Margaret E Ward, former journalist and broadcaster for the Irish Times, Sunday Times and Newstalk radio in Dublin, she gave her views on media diversity, democracy and the voice of authority.

Majella McCloskey, Chief Executive of CO3 and the driving force behind the event commented that,

“Given the economic, social and political issues facing Northern Ireland, leaders in the third sector offer an important source of expertise and independent comment about what’s going on and the impact on communities.  The media has a crucial independent role in Northern Ireland that we want to support with greater engagement, and I am delighted that so many media personnel engaged in this event, which is part of CO3’s work to connect its members with experts from other sectors.”

Andy Mills, Head of Business Banking in Northern Ireland at Ulster Bank, who sponsored the event, said:

“Ulster Bank is delighted to be involved with this important conference which seeks to bring third sector leaders and media representatives together.  We are serious about continuing to work with the third sector.  By improving our understanding of the challenges this sector faces and refreshing the products and services we offer, we hope to help facilitate strong communities throughout the island of Ireland”.

A Guest Panel comprising Paul Connolly, Belfast Telegraph, Marie Louise Connolly, BBC, Barry McCafferty, The Detail, Brian Pelan, The View and Susie Brown, NI Assembly gave the delegates an opportunity for a “Question and Answer” session on their media issues.
