Transferring the Family Farm

It is not surprising there was a huge attendance at the Teagasc seminar titled ''Transferring the Family Farm' in Kilkenny last Monday,November 5th, since 8 out of 10 Irish farmers don't have a successor identified.  In addition more than 50% of farmers have not yet made a will. The crowd was predominately husband and wife 'teams', with quite a high age profile.

Speakers on the night included tax advisers, solicitors, succession mediators and social welfare advisers. A key topic of debate was ensuring that the retired farmers and spouse has sufficient income after the farm is transferred.

The seminar hoped to make farmers more aware of the process of transferring the family farm and make it a less daunting experience.
