Tenderscout are #businessachievers

Background to business

Tony spent several years writing proposals for large and small SMEs, while at the same time, evaluating proposals written by other SMEs for public contracts. He quickly realised that the technical capabilities required to write a proposal are lacking in the vast majority of SMEs. They were losing contacts for reasons that had nothing to do with their ability to do the work.

With a background in computer programming, Tony set out to build a software platform to enable any SME regardless of 'proposal expertise' to compete for and win government contracts.

Formed by whom, where, when, why & how?

TenderScout was founded in 2014 by Tony, in Dublin with the help of a Competitive Startup Fund grant of €50,000 from Enterprise Ireland.

What is your biggest business achievement to date?

Our first indication of credibility was reaching the final of the Websummit Spark of Genius in 2014 and the last year we won the Eir Spider Grand Prix award. I’m most proud of the team we’ve built that truly believe in the company vision and have the drive to realise the mission.

TenderCon, our separate events brand, is the personification of this vision and I feel we are now considered thought leaders in and champions of the SME.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

I remember overhearing someone at a conference saying that our business idea was nonsensical! Until quite recently that’s a criticism I heard a lot and remaining resilient throughout was a challenge. We were fortunate however in that the few customers we had were winning contracts and were happy to refer us to others. It’s those early advocates that helped us get past the early negativity and be confident that we were on the right track.

What's the best business tip you've ever received?

Everybody gets lucky sometimes – make sure you’re ready to capitalise on the opportunity when it comes your way.

What advice would you offer to someone starting a business?

Realise that you’re probably doing something that nobody else has done or has found too hard to do and that everybody will expect you to fail. Even a mediocre idea will succeed if underpinned by resilience and hard work.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’d like to be leading a top-class team at TenderScout recognised for building a category-leading business and most notable for transforming the business fortunes of tendering SMEs all around the world.

What does Business Achievement mean to you?

Being recognised as a Business Achiever means we are some way on our journey to deliver on our mission to demystify tenders for SMEs. It means that SMEs trust us and our product, and because of TenderScout, are changing their strategy and winning new business with government departments.
