Social media marketing tips

In this post I outline some social media marketing tips I learned after attending an excellent Digital Marketing and Social Media library talk organised by Dublin City Enterprise Board and presented by Noel Davidson in 2012. The room was packed full of people wanted to know how they can use social media to boost their small business or start-up.

Social Media (SM) is an extension to our normal human interaction; it is just like talking or texting but over the internet. Social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Youtube, LinkedIn and MySpace (recently purchased by Justin Timberlake). We have seen the growth of brands and business using social media to promote themselves and spread their messages.

Recent video campaigns that went viral (very popular) included Dollar Shave Club, Old Spice and the Bud Lite swear jar. These videos had a sizzle or some extra humour and creativity rather than just the hard sell approach. Winning:

To win in social media it is important to remember the 3 Ps:
  1. Protect Set up your website, social media and trading name early to prevent others taking the name.
  2. Promote Use Facebook or Google ad campaigns. Tell your friends, family & customers that your business in online.
  3. Participate Update the content on your SM or website regularly, nothing looks worse than a Facebook that has not been updated in weeks. Regular updates keep you higher in the Google search rankings.

  • 30% of FB users are female aged 25-34years.
  • FB is not too popular with teens or early 20s.
  • 901m users globally
If you want people to “Like” your FB then post or pass along interesting content such as great pictures or videos. For example, Thomas Cook’s main FB audience is females so they posted a video of a child saying how she prefers mom to dad, it was a huge hit. Other great FB pages include Esker Hill Golf course or BMW Ireland.

Creating a FB advert could not be easier and it can be set up within minutes. You can target your customers precisely (such as females aged 25-34 living in Rathmines) and set how much you are willing to spend on the campaign. You can track your FB activity or campaign using the insights button (only on FB business pages) and see your audience demographics.


Twitter is essentially a newsfeed online and messages are restricted to 140 characters. You can start/join conversations and upload images. Popular twitters include Stephen Fry or Mark Little. You can search popular or trending stories using the twitter search bar.


LinkedIn is the business professionals social media and allows you to connect with professionals, suppliers, customers or business partners around the world. You can join interest groups sich as the 121 Business Group or Enterprise Ireland for example. LinkedIn looks like a CV online and does not include pictures or videos. It is a networking tool Must for business owners.
