The US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards are a joint initiative of the Royal Irish Academy and the American Chamber of Commerce, Ireland and recognise excellence in research innovation, creation and invention by an organisation, as a result of US Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Ireland. These awards acknowledge exemplary ideas, originating in Irish organisations, and underpinned by innovative research, that have a strong social and/or economic impact.

The awards are presented in three categories:

  1. The Irish operations of US headquartered and controlled multinational company
  2. An Irish Higher Education Institute or Research Centre with US corporate links
  3. An Irish microenterprise or SME with US corporate links

The nominees for the SME category sponsored by Ulster Bank are Allergy Standards, Avectas and Vocavio.

Each of the companies were selected from a large pool of submissions with each entry evaluated by the award assessment panel that included Ulster Bank’s Head of FDI, Yvonne Kennedy, KPMG Head of Technology, Anna Scully and Dick Ahlstrom, Science Editor at the Irish Times amongst others.

Allergy Standards

Allergy Standards have been nominated for the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program which is a unique partnership between an Irish scientific standards body, and the largest US patient advocacy group Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Avectas have developed Solupore, a highly innovative and unique cell engineering technology comprising of a device and proprietary reagents, to engineer cells fit for immunotherapy. This will enable drug developers to overcome challenges in the manufacture of life saving cell therapies.

Vocavio has been nominated for the SME award for the integration of cloud-based speech dialog analysis software with simulated emergency training systems for pilots.
