Respecting Personal Data and the Law

Business must start taking the personal data they hold on customers, employees and suppliers seriously.

Figuring out the type of data that’s being held, where it’s being stored and who’s responsible for it will be law from May and so the managing and control of personal data becomes an ongoing process.

Eventually personal data will need to be stored securely with processes in place to ensure personal data is kept ring fenced under a secure infrastructure.

As business managers we need to get a handle on our data now. GDPR means that every piece of personal information held by your business needs to be identified – wherever it’s stored, locally, on a mobile device or in the cloud.

Identifying data need not be a complex task but it needs to be carried out to ensure efficient handling of data in the future - to meet the law.

Technology can help. New solutions are available that can offer a thorough approach to data discovery, secure store and secure share. Properly implemented, data discovery and management will lead not only to meeting GDPR requirements but may also lead to data that the business did not know about.

When you understand where you’re holding personal data, you’ll then be able to better manage compliance and the processes involved in dealing with that data. You’ll also be prepared for Subject Access Requests (SARs) – used by individuals who want to see a copy of the information an organisation holds about them – and the ’right to be forgotten’, which may require you to identify and erase all of an individual’s data.

Preparation is key, but then it just becomes an ongoing workflow that’s naturally part of the business.
