Linked Finance; Solaris Tea

Solaris Tea ( was set up in 2003. Based in Unit3 Ballybane Enterprise Centre, Castlepark Road, Galway, Solaris specialises in the blending and preparation of International Award winning Whole-Leaf Organic Teas. They are looking for € 25,000 to finance their expansion plans

The idea

The idea was conceived whilst Karin, my now wife, and I were studying a degree course in herbal medicine. We then tried some local cafes and herbal shops in the UK prior to our move to Ireland in the early years of 2000, where we saw demand for our offerings grow. So really it started as a lifestyle business then developed into a more established widespread operation.

UK, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Slovenia, Finland and Saudi Arabia

Aside from supplying the domestic market we are currently exporting to high-end delis, restaurants, hotels and spas throughout the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Slovenia, Finland and Saudi Arabia. Some of our well known clients in Ireland would include the likes of Insomnia, Google, Apple (through compass group), the Shelbourne hotel (through la rousse),Fallon and Byrne. Mc Cambridges, Morton's (Galway) as well as Harrods in London! There are 6 of working full-time within the business here in Galway, from the operations and sales side to manufacturing and delivery. We also have part-time staff in the UK and Germany.

In terms of our marketing approach, we have begun to roll out a strategic marketing plan over the last while which pulls together all our promotional elements into one cohesive calendar. At the moment we are promoting the products through a newsletter, blog, Facebook, Twitter and on the website itself. We have an online shop in which we sell a number of tea products. Selling business-to-business, we find that the more traditional trade shows are key to us to build relationships and make sales within this sector. Our Solaris Tea range consists of top grade, loose, organic speciality teas. We take great pride in sourcing the finest whole leaf teas, which are hand-picked with care to ensure excellence in quality.

Our goals

Our goal is to develop more of a coffee-like approach to the sale and consumption of quality, artisan teas in Ireland. For example a ‘Tea Academy’ where there is more development and learning around the service proposition and how to properly blend, brew and serve tea.

Michelin star

In fact, we’ve partnered with Michelin-starred restaurant Aniar to create bespoke recipes in line with their ethos.

Our strong point

Our strong point is customisation – customising tea flavours to the needs to our customers. We have won numerous awards over the years including: 13 Great Taste Awards Two Best Irish Organic Grocery Awards The Eurotoque 2010 awards for outstanding contribution to Irish cuisine Best new start-up Award (National Enterprise Awards) 2013 We have built up a solid and loyal customer base in Ireland and across our European markets. Similarly people are increasingly recognising the health benefits of tea and it is becoming more popular as both a health and leisure drink.
