1.91million People now in work, an increase of 61,000 (3.3%) in Q4 2013 compared to Q4 2012

3.3% Increase in employment rate in the last year

11.8% Current unemployment rate (Mar 2014) down from 15.1% (Feb 2012); has dropped 21 mths in row

7.2% Long term unemployment rate (Q4 2013), down from 8.2% last year

Unemployment rate drops to 11.8%, lowest rate in 5 years (CSO)

  • Those signing on the Live Register fell by 1,800 last month, marking the 21st month of successive decline
  • On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number stood at 396,900 for March
  • Long-term unemployment is now 179,335 people; 45.8% of all claimants signing on are still over 12 months
Irish manufacturing expanded last month at its sharpest rate since April 2011.
  • Irish Purchasing Managers Index was 55.5 for March, marking 10th successive monthly expansion
  • Expectation that increased demand for Irish exports will lead to economic growth of around 2% in 2014
  • According to PMI expectations of further improvements, employers are increasing staff numbers
We’re averaging 120 start-ups per day since start of 2014
  • 10,741 new businesses and start-ups since the beginning of the year, according to Vision-net
  • This is an increase of 6% on last year, averaging 120 start-ups per day
  • 60% is made up of Professional Services, Wholesale, Retail, IT, Construction, Social & Personal
  • Vision-net noted that insolvencies, receiverships and creditors’ meetings have all fallen
Q1 Car sales were at their highest since 2008
  • Sales up 26% on last year, according to Society for Motor Industry Ireland
  • At the end of March 49,960 cars were sold as opposed to 39,466 for the same period in 2013
  • Commercial sales are also seeing a boost with van sales up 43% and truck sales up 40%

9 new routes for Shannon Airport to take-off in the coming 5 days

  • New Ryanair services will fly to Munich, Paris, Faro, Warsaw, Krakow, Nice, Poitiers, Berlin and Fuerteventura.
  • Also Aer Lingus will fly six days a week all year round to New York and twice a week to Malaga
Social Entrepreneurs Ireland fund now looking for applicants
  • €420,000 fund to be allocated to 9 business ideas, with further additional support as part of the prize
  • Closing date for entries is 28 April
Report on costs of doing business 2014 published by National Competitiveness Council
  • Report finds Ireland’s costs base has improved making Irish firms more competitive internationally
  • This is making Ireland a more attractive location for firms to base their operations
  • But…indicators show that Ireland’s relative cost competitiveness is now deteriorating & labour costs are rising
  • Business service costs are also increasing: e.g. business interest rates are 31% higher than in Eurozone
