The gig economy may have now come to fear it due to the fact that the mainstream media has demonised it and equated it to the much dreaded zero-hour contracts.  This has been fuelled by court cases lost by gig economy giants like Uber and Deliveroo.

However, the economy has been largely a positive for many sectors in the UK, especially the logistics sector.  The flexibility on offer in the gig economy means that more individuals are identifying with industries they fit in such as the logistics industry, without becoming attached for the long term. How has the gig economy transformed the logistics industry across the UK?

Logistics companies have a more agile workforce

Consumer behaviours have changed drastically over the last few years. This means that more than ever, businesses need a workforce that is agile and ready to compete in the face of digital disruptions. Businesses no longer need to hire more workers than required, getting hooked on overhead costs. In the Gig Economy, logistics businesses only need to hire exactly the number of workers required to fully complete a day’s tasks.

This is perhaps best demonstrated by the relationship between white van drivers and the numerous e-commerce stores seeking for new ways to meet customer needs across the UK. More freelance workers means a reduction in unemployment

The gig economy has given rise to different platforms that have simplified the process of getting roles for freelancers in the logistics industry.  The playing field has been levelled across board. Middlemen have been largely eliminated.

Millennials working in the logistics sector can elect to get engaged on a full time basis, for a few days or for a few minutes. The generation that have grown up with the smartphone at their fingertips can now enjoy unlimited flexibility with their employment situation. The days when it was normal for employees to stay committed for decades is now long gone.

Better Work/Life Balance: Happier Workforce

In the standard corporate environment, workers have to gladly accept two to three weeks of vacation each year. Outside of this, the work/life balance is near non-existent. This leads to reduced productivity as a result of jaded workers. The gig economy on the other hand means that more workers can cut down on hours committed to at work when there is need to do so without any added anxieties. The gig economy ensures that people are in control of their incomes.

From the taxi niche to the dog walking and goods delivery niches, the benefits of the gig economy are readily visible. The negative picture created by a culture of fear and previous history with zero hour contracts must not change this.  Five million people are currently employed by the gig economy. The number will only increase in the coming years.
