Why Do Anything Less Than Follow Your Heart….

‘Why do anything less than follow your heart’, These were the opening remarks from Michael Hayman, Co-founder of Seven Hills at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards.

Michael spoke about the importance of having a mission and referenced the likes of Whole Food Markets and how having a mission lead to galvanising people who directly bought into that mission. In a video John Mackey, the founder of Whole Foods Markets spoke about a flood in his store at in the very early days of his business. He spoke of staff cleaning up and then questioned other people he saw helping with the clean up, he know their faces. He quickly realised they were his customers. Customers were so invested in his mission that that were willing to help him get his business back on track.

During his presentation Michael called out some stark stats:

- 37 of the world’s top 100 economies are corporations

- 40% of US GDP is dependent on companies that did not exist 15 years ago

- Only 30 of the original FTSE 100 companies made it to the 30th anniversary

- The most powerful companies of your lifetime are yet to be created

He then spoke about inspiration and productivity and how they are directly linked. One inspired employee equates roughly to two and a quarter satisfied employees. The question he posed was how do businesses inspire employees? The answer he believes lies in a company’s mission. Mission to make a difference and it will be the new normal and indeed will be expected by millennials, who by 2025 will make up over 75% of the workforce.

He also referenced with so few shopping days to Christmas nobody should be stuck for a present and suggested his book Mission: How the best in business break through would make the perfect present!
