Business competitions as part of your marketing mix?

Have you ever consider making business competitions as part of your marketing plan?

You are going in to win and that is the right attitude, but is also a great tool to look at your performance as a business. The exercise to put your business in a SHORT application and make it compelling is a learning exercise in itself, but also the presenting to the judges, the pitching on camera and the meeting with like minded companies at the events all help.

It is worthwhile spending some time on thinking about your application and your pitch. It might help you to step back, take a helicopter view and spot some things that need improving.

That aspect of business competitions is the most undervalues part. Helping business people to take a strategic view. In the long term that is more important than the PR, the media profile, the prices and the free drinks at the finals.

Although the visibility winning this competition gives you, should not be underestimated. It looks good, it opens doors, it gives your recognitions and adds to your brand. And success breeds success.

Here are some tips (and feel free to add).

  1. Read the questions carefully
  2. Follow the instructions
  3. Do a rough draft (you can download the application form here)
  4. Take your time
  5. Take a step back for a day or two and read your answers again
  6. Use the right format
  7. Spell check!!!
  8. Be brief
  9. Avoid jargon and keep it simple and understandable (pretend you are explaining it to your grandma)
