Give us the background to your business

We started Pet Sitters Ireland in 2010 to solve a problem of our own. At the time we had a cat and dog and we hated leaving them in kennels. I felt guilty that it wasn’t the lifestyle they were used to and so we stopped going away so much.

When I was chatting to a friend in the UK she told me that she was looking after peoples cats when they went away and charging them for it – as a Cat Sitting Service. This sounded like the perfect solution for pet lovers just like us who didn’t have family close by to take care of their pets when they went away and didn’t want to use a kennel to look after them.

After some initial research it seemed like there were a lot of people that felt the same way as us and wanted this service.

We quickly realised the demand was in all areas of Ireland and that’s why we decided that Pet Sitters Ireland would be a Nationwide business, also offering a daily dog walking service.

The best business tip you've ever received?

By far the best advice I have ever received is to start a blog. At first I was really resistant to the idea. I wasn’t a vet or a pet expert, so I didn’t really feel I had huge amounts to share.

What I quickly realised the more I researched the world of blogging was that I didn’t need to be an expert. I just needed to share what we did how we do it and offer help to those people that love their pets as much as we do.

Once I started seriously committing to blogging the traffic to our website increased dramatically, as did the enquiries. I invested in training for myself and read books to learn the best tips and techniques to grow our blog and our social media channels. Whilst blogging is a big time investment it has certainly been our most profitable investment to date.

Any advice for other business owners?

My best piece of advice would be to find someone whose work you admire and reach out and ask for help from them. Sticking to one path for our business has meant we have been very focused on what we need to do.

It’s very easy to get distracted by all the Facebook Groups, Networking Events and Trainings on offer.

I would also recommend reading business books and surrounding yourself with positive people.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I see Pet Sitters Ireland being a household name for premium Pet Care. Our network is constantly growing as we help, support and encourage our franchisees to grow their businesses.

What does business achievement mean to you?

Business achievement for me is about helping people. Whether that is through the content we write, the social media groups we run or through the care with offer to people's pets.

It’s so rewarding to think we can make a difference for people and their pets and be there for them when they need us.
