Give us the background to your business

Tellmystorybook Ltd was founded in April 2016. We appeared on the Dragons Den in May 2016 and received a €40,000 investment in exchange for 20% equity from Dragons Den star Barry O’Sullivan. Our business started out in designing, manufacturing and selling unique personalised children’s books.

What makes our books unique is that every page is specially printed using a photograph of the child.

We superimpose a photo of the child's head onto the main character in our books. When the child sees that they are the main character in their very own story, their reactions are priceless! We also incorporate the child's name throughout our stories.

Our books are selling strongly and we have shipped to over 35 countries worldwide. Our customers love them but we felt that in order to grow our company at a faster rate that we needed to release a non personalised product. A product that we could sell directly into shops, stores and chain stores world-wide. So after a lot of development and market research we released “My Buddy McSpuddy” on the 14th November 2018 and he is proving to be massive hit.

Tell us about My Buddy McSpuddy

My Buddy McSpuddy is a magical leprechaun who has been described as the Irish version of Elf on the shelf but we believe he is better! Parent love him as he promotes good behaviour and children love him for his magical elements.

He arrives in your house with his pot of gold and his 7 gold coins. The child minds his pot of gold and My Buddy McSpuddy minds the 7 gold coins in MagicLand; when the child is good McSpuddy will magically pop a gold coin into the child’s pot.

When the child collects all 7 gold coins they will receive a wish! You agree wishes with your child and write them into the “wish list page” that you’ll find in the accompanying hardback book.

He also has a Worry Patch: If your child is nervous or worried My Buddy McSpuddy has a worry patch on his elbow which they can rub to take their worries away. On his other elbow he has a good luck patch that they can rub if they need luck for the day!

My Buddy McSpuddy appeared on last year Late Late Toy Show and received a fantastic review by Ryan Tubridy young Davy from Galway.

He is for sale in Arnotts, Toymaster stores across Ireland and the UK, Carrolls Irish Gifts, The Kilkenny Group, Knock airport, and many more stores across Ireland.

Last February we launched him into America and Canada and they are loving him over there, he can also be found for sales in Disney World Florida. We are launching him into Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East by the end of the summer and then we have plans for further global expansion for early 2020.

The best business tip you've ever received?

“Concentrate on sales and the rest will come.”

Develop a good product or service and then get to market as quickly as you can and get selling.

Then surround yourself with a great team.

Any advice for other business owners?

Do it! Get stuff done but make sure do it in an organised way.

“You will never plough a field by turning it over in your mind”.

What work for me is routine. When you go into the office in the morning the very first thing you need to do is write up your list for the day. Take 10 minutes to do this first thing and then pick one item off the list at a time and Do It!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Due to the great reaction to My Buddy McSpuddy I hope that he will be a household name globally in 5 years’ time. We have follow up products for McSpuddy that will be coming out shortly and we are working on an animated movie for him that we are very excited about.

I love the creative side of our business and look forward to developing and expanding our range in the coming years.

What does business achievement mean to you?

Business achievement should be celebrated; it’s something that I rarely did. But it is something that I am learning to do. If you can’t enjoy the business along the way, then what is the point? So recently I have started looking back at what I have achieved and gave myself a little pat on the back. I have a long way to go to reach my lofty aspirations but I am going to start enjoying the journey more when things are good when goals are reached.

Where can people connect with you and your business?

Check out our website at you can see a video of My Buddy McSpuddy there which explains his magical concept.
