5 Tips to Keep Your Business Running Even During Vacations

Holidays are of utmost importance for all, but precautions need to be taken before you leave for a vacation in case you have a business. There are plenty of ways in which you can enjoy a hassle free vacation in spite of your business running smoothly. Even if you are the kind of person who micromanages everything, you have to learn to let go at times. Necessary precautions taken on time can save you a lifetime of trouble and this article aims at helping you with just that. Even if there is trouble, they usually end up teaching some huge lessons that help the business in the longer run. Here are some easy steps you can follow to have your business run seamlessly while you are on your holiday.

1. Start planning and communicating your plans to clients well in advance

Most problems that occur are due to communication gaps and those need to be avoided at all costs. Plan your vacation in advance and set the dates. Communicate those to your clients and then ask them exactly what work they’ll require during that time so that you can delegate it properly. Clearly chalk out the plan of action and deliverable while you’re away so that there is no scope of accusations later on. Keep the dates blocked and remember to not schedule personal meetings and other such work during that time. Delegate work to others well so that you don’t have too much piled up work when you return from that relaxing exotic vacation.

2. Select a person who will personally take care of things when you are away

This is crucial. Find someone who understand your field and can handle your business when you’re away. This contact must be included in your auto responded emails so that all emergency situations can be taken care of. Explain all the work to this person and preferably choose someone who understands your business’ workflow well. This person should be well versed with the nuances of handling emergencies or at least putting off work amicable till you can take over. Let this person take his or her own decisions and can only filter the most necessary bits which need to reach you even when you’re away. Make sure that this person’s thoughts match yours as drastic differences might create trouble.

3. Make your employees more functional

This involves training them for emergencies and asking them when they have regular problems about what they’d do if at some point you were away. This would empower them and help them take better decisions. Offer more work opportunities amongst employees while you are away. Let them voluntarily take up leadership roles. They not only learn better when they work like this but are able to better address problems that crop up. They also learn in this process the importance of the bond of trust and their importance in the company.

4. Keep back up options and disaster management ready

Having some back up options and thinking ahead is always great. Disaster may occur but have a team ready who would only concentrate on that when you’re away. That way, you will be rest assured that there isn’t too much trouble. Prepare for the most extreme situations and keep detailed plans ready in case they occur. The security of knowing that there exists something like this also helps workers work better.

5. Be available, at least in the worst scenarios

Even though you are on holiday, ask for one virtual meeting a day f possible. In this age of digitization where everyone has a smart phone and internet connection, this shouldn’t be very difficult. Ask for email updates so that your team knows that they have to be accountable and submit their bit of the day to you even though you are away. Give them the assurance that you will be available in case the worst case does occur. Being in touch with the person you put in touch in place of you is extremely important too. Communication gaps are the worst and avoid those at all costs.

Most importantly, do not fret it too much. Your clients also go on holidays and understand the necessity of them. They will understand and accept it when you are away. Your business will run fine. However, review and asses the working of the business while you were away. Critiquing your own business will help you understand the loopholes and help you manage things better the next time you go on a vacation.
