20 New Domain Extensions

This year has been an exciting one for the Internet. Until 2013 there have only been 22 different popular domain extensions, however it’s all changing. ICANN (the organisation who oversee all domains on the internet) is releasing over 1,300 new domain extensions, or commonly known as gTLDs, ranging from .attorney to .zone.

The amount of people adopting new gTLDs is growing at an alarming rate each day. Cities, companies and even buildings have their own dot extension now. Because so many websites have commonly used extensions such as .com, it is becoming ever more difficult to find a domain name which is memorable and effective at the same time, this is why more companies are having to use long and ineffective domain names. The creation of new gTLDs are going to change the way people view the internet.

Here are my top 20 domains

.guru, .blog, .shop, .club, .company, .today, .photography, .email, .services, .media, .expert, .technology, .agency, .business, .consulting, .careers, .social, .London, .marketing, and my favourite of them all - .ninja.

What opportunity does this present?

There is a whole host of great opportunities presented by the introduction of new domain extensions. Geographic advantage, greater keyword choice, improved segment focussing and even new business models are to name a few.

The magic words on the internet are keywords. It is what people type into search engines when looking for content and that is what gets your site noticed. With a domain that has your keyword(s) in, plus a site that is full of good content and keywords means your site is guaranteed to get noticed, and your site will often rank higher compared with your competitors.

What does this mean?

Simply, it means there are a lot more domains for you and your business to choose from. For example, if gymshoes.com is taken, then gym.shoes may also be available.

Where do I buy them from?

Domain extensions vary from registrar to registrar, but your best bet is to look at GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com) and using their domain search tool on the website.

Is it time to rethink your web identity?
